The Walk to Weyland’s

Standard
The Walk to Weyland’s

Background:

This skein was created from divine fibre, handdyed by Hilltop Cloud. The luxury combed top came as a dyed rainbow gradient in beautiful harvest shades. I decided to spin it as a fractal yarn, so split the fibre lengthwise into halves, split one half into quarters, split one quarter into eighths and split one eighth into sixteenths. The fibre was spun finely in sequence from the half to the last sixteenth, and the single was navajo plied to preserve the colour changes. Combined with the luxury fibre, this was a very special skein indeed.

Story:

Crisp autumn day. Frost dances with sunbeams in a perfect pas de deux.

2.2 kilometers says the sign.

Set off up the hill, to the ancient trackway, passing the signs of autumn, harvest just around the corner.

Leaves give up their vibrant green life and mellow to chestnut shades. Showers of red hawthorns peek through and purple sloes gather in abundance.

The sky shifts – from clear, bright blue to purple-grey clouds rolling in.

We pass the abundance of the hedgerow – leaves, trees, berries, shrubs, flowers, fruit, crab apples.

The hedgerow parts, allowing views across the farmland. A copse of trees in the distance surrounds our destination.

More than five-and-a-half thousand years old and still revered today.

The path comes to an end and the trees form the entrance. I lay eyes on the long barrow, and wonder at my ancestors.

I shall rest a while at Weyland’s Smithy.

Devon Memories

Devon Memories

Background:

I ran a competition for one winner to receive a rolag set, with the offer to spin them if requested. The theme of the competition was food and drink. The entrants suggested their favourite teats as inspiration for their rolag sets. The lucky winner chose the theme of a traditional cream tea for her rolags, and asked me to spin them. I had such fun with this project.

Story:

2015-11-01 17.56.43

Long, lazy days in the precious summer break. Time to indulge: A famous cream tea.

Freshly baked scones, still soft and warm from the oven.

Made by hand as a labour of love, by hands that have worked the dough for a lifetime.

The same hands that took the time to pick, clean and boil the fruit into jam. To heat the cream, slowly and steadily until it gives up its richest, golden crust.

Exotic tea: not of this continent, but still picked by hands. Knowledgeable hands, searching out the tender leaves. Plucking, drying, roasting, packing.

To be brought back to life with freshly boiled Devon water.

This was one half of a skill swap. In return for hooking up a crochet pattern for me, I received two beautiful rolag sets to spin into yarn. This is one of those rolag sets.

Story:

I’m in the presence of royalty. Quite unexpected. I’m a stranger here. I don’t know who this person is, but I know their position. How? It’s called “royal purple” for a reason. The most precious of all colours. Harvested from sea snails, each tiny mollusc giving up a single drop of purple dye. And look around. Flowers from the hot house, colours rarely seen in nature. Servants to tend the orchids and fine, saffron-spiced food. Only the best here. Only the best for the fewest people.

Story:

Disco lights.

Disco darkness.

Do you hear the music better when there’s less to see?

Maybe not less. But other.

There’s the light show. Primaries and secondaries. No subtleties. Pulsing, dancing, rolling, chasing over walls and ceiling and people.

People on the dark dance floor. Why do they come here? To forget? To live? To be in their own skin? To care? To not care?

This temple of dark and music, of noise and lights, of abstraction and connection. Disco lights: witness to it all.

One Sky, Many Stories

One Sky, Many Stories

Background:

One of the perks of working from home is seeing my children get enthused about the work I do, and ask to be taught the skills needed to create with fibre. These rolags were designed by my daughter, Imogen, whose inspiration was both the cloudy blue sky and the starry night sky. They were spun by me, and the story was written by Imogen.

2015-08-22 20.38.42

Story:

I gazed up at the mesmerising sky as it changes, and the clouds fade by.

I watch the sunset colour change from blue to pink to red, and finally to the black of night when the clouds no longer hide the silver, twinkling stars.

I realise: this sky has a story.

Adventures in Space & Time

Background:

This was such a fun commission! By the time the yarn was made I could just imagine a little tardis whizzing through the scene.

Story:

2015-08-21 13.42.00

Space.

The vast, empty void. The vacuum of space.

Empty.

Apart from the stars.

But the rest of space is empty.

Except for the planets and moons and comets and asteroids.

But there’s nothing else.

Apart from the nebulae, showing off, all blues, pinks, reds and greens.

And apart from the galaxies, some spiral-armed and twisting together with the inky blackness.

But aside from all that … empty.

If you don’t count the neutrinos and photons and muons and …

But otherwise, nothing there.

(Except, maybe, dark matter?)

Even black holes are thought to emit radiation.

So really, what is there to explore?

What adventures could you possibly have?

Five Shades of Twilight

Five Shades of Twilight

Background:

Five shades of the same colour, kept distinct via navajo plying. The “rebellious older women” in the story is a reference toย Jenny Joseph’s famous poem.

Story:

What does purple mean to me?

It means Parma Violets,

Tanzanite,

Rebellious older women!

Suffragettes,

Lavender bushes,

Spanish bluebells,

Twilight,

and Summer midnight.

So if you ask me why I like purple, that’s my reply.
