Every Good Thing

Standard
Every Good Thing

Background:

I was sent a braid to spin for a swap. I wanted to do something really special with it so decided to ply it with a luscious blend from Countess Ablaze:

The supplied blend was all light and brightness and fun, fresh colours. The darker blend was deep and subtle and more mysterious. They seemed like two sides of the same story, and as I wanted the yarn to arrive as a Mothers’ Day gift, so the story came about.

Story:

1. The Light: “Nurture”

Watching them breathe whilst they sleep.

Sleepy eyes and rosy cheeks when they wake.

Joyful cuddles and time together.

Precious moments, rushing by too fast.

Playing in the park: candyfloss and water slides.

Making daisy chains in the sun.

Bedtime stories.

Sleep.

2. The Dark: “Indulgence”

Having a day all to myself.

Dropping responsibility and embracing freedom.

Staying up late and sneakily raiding the chocolate stash!

Because I’m a grown-up (so they say) and it’s allowed.

Doing something just for me. Just because I want to.

And looking forward to being with them again.

Background:

I love spinning gradient yarns, and had another chance to indulge this hobby for a skill swap with a very talented knitter. As the yarn was created the colours spoke to me first of metal and then rust, merging into the colours of dusky rose petals. The gradient fibre set, from the very talented Hilltop Cloud, was called “Padlock”, so I named the yarn “Unlocked”.

Story:

Leave the shelter of the homestead – hearth and warmth and family – and step over the threshold. Survey the garden wilderness, full of hidden nooks waiting to be found.

Follow the path as it slowly becomes more and more overgrown. As what was open and passable becomes a natural obstacle course of leaves, twigs and fallen branches.

A dead end? But, not quite hidden, a door, and hanging from it a rusty padlock hinting of past treasures once hidden from uninvited guests. Unused and ineffective now, you push the crumbling timbers of the door. Hinges squeak, grumbling at the call to action, and finally the sight, hidden for so long, comes into view: twisted, overgrown and thorny, but in bloom!

The rose garden is rediscovered. 🌹

Milky Way

Background:

I made this skein for a competition winner. I wanted to do something really special for her, and was inspired by the “Constellstion” range of fibres. What Sarah did with this yarn made it even more special, and is one of my very favourite memories from the first year of Story Skeins.

Story:

Trace the constellations telling stories in the sky: the distant, fiery hearts of other worlds.

Would our stories make sense to them?

Would they recognise the warrior, the queen, the beasts of myth?

Does our sun play a part in their stories?

What do we look like to them; all those thousands of light years between us?

Such are the questions the heavens can inspire.

Sarah did beatiful things with her yarn, and even continued the story:

Photo Collage Maker_8usasc

As the atmosphere shifted the stars aligned and the stories as old as time were drawn into the skies.

Pictures were shining out to the eyes wide with wonder.

In those bright eyes history and amazement fought to shine through and she knew then that the night sky was her truth.

She wondered if the stars knew she was there, what they thought as they watched over her.

As her eyes began to close with the sleepiness of a fulfilled 3 year old, the night sky became a wrap that enveloped her in all its warmth and kept the terrors at bay.

The girl could finally sleep, ready to wake when the sun made its appearence the very next day.

Maelstrom

Maelstrom

Background:

A first experiment in core spinning. I love the swirl of ocean colours in this art yarn.

Story:

Storms approaching

Waves start to swell

Slowly at first

Gentle mist surrounds us.

We are not worried, This is our life, we know the terrain, we understand the fickle personality of nature out at sea.

Clouds darken. Now deep blues and purples, more ominous hues to the seafolk.

Waves start to roil

Rising and crashing

Tossing us about like beads of sweat as the grand ocean flexes her muscles.

We steel ourselves for battle.

Only one of us shall win this day.

“Dance your cares away,” they said. “Worry’s for another day.”

I challenge you to feel anything other than happy when looking at these colours.

The oranges of Red’s amazing, expressive hair, the purple of Gobo, the blue of Mokey – truly a noble race! Captured in yarn to surround you with good cheer.

So, let the music play!

Champagne and Bouncy Castles

Standard
Champagne and Bouncy Castles

Background:

This is “Champagne & Bouncy Castles”, so called because as I was spinning it all I could think of was parties. The fibre was unlabelled, but I suspect it is a merino/silk/angelina mix. There were so many beautiful colours blended together, I wanted to preserve that in the yarn and not over-complicate it. This is a lovely singles yarn, and the colours remain as clearly defined swirls in the twist.

Story:

Time to let our hair down

Time to have some fun.

Time to let our worries go now that the work is done.

Time to be a kid again,

Responsibility-free!

Time to do the things we do when nobody can see:

Rule the bouncy castle,

Dance like no-one’s there.

Realise what life is like without a single care.

Soon we’ll don the mantles

Once more of adult roles.

But for tonight be wild and free – those are our only goals.
