Milky Way

Background:

I made this skein for a competition winner. I wanted to do something really special for her, and was inspired by the “Constellstion” range of fibres. What Sarah did with this yarn made it even more special, and is one of my very favourite memories from the first year of Story Skeins.

Story:

Trace the constellations telling stories in the sky: the distant, fiery hearts of other worlds.

Would our stories make sense to them?

Would they recognise the warrior, the queen, the beasts of myth?

Does our sun play a part in their stories?

What do we look like to them; all those thousands of light years between us?

Such are the questions the heavens can inspire.

Sarah did beatiful things with her yarn, and even continued the story:

Photo Collage Maker_8usasc

As the atmosphere shifted the stars aligned and the stories as old as time were drawn into the skies.

Pictures were shining out to the eyes wide with wonder.

In those bright eyes history and amazement fought to shine through and she knew then that the night sky was her truth.

She wondered if the stars knew she was there, what they thought as they watched over her.

As her eyes began to close with the sleepiness of a fulfilled 3 year old, the night sky became a wrap that enveloped her in all its warmth and kept the terrors at bay.

The girl could finally sleep, ready to wake when the sun made its appearence the very next day.

Background:

A little pick-me-up for an internet friend.

Story:

Friends come in all shapes and colours and places and times. Some you’ve never even met. Some you haven’t spoken to. You have no idea what their voice sounds like. Do they have an accent? Do they sound kind? Or funny? Or do they hold back? And listen? On the surface they may seem like merely words on a screen. But the right words at the right time can change everything.

Devon Memories

Devon Memories

Background:

I ran a competition for one winner to receive a rolag set, with the offer to spin them if requested. The theme of the competition was food and drink. The entrants suggested their favourite teats as inspiration for their rolag sets. The lucky winner chose the theme of a traditional cream tea for her rolags, and asked me to spin them. I had such fun with this project.

Story:

2015-11-01 17.56.43

Long, lazy days in the precious summer break. Time to indulge: A famous cream tea.

Freshly baked scones, still soft and warm from the oven.

Made by hand as a labour of love, by hands that have worked the dough for a lifetime.

The same hands that took the time to pick, clean and boil the fruit into jam. To heat the cream, slowly and steadily until it gives up its richest, golden crust.

Exotic tea: not of this continent, but still picked by hands. Knowledgeable hands, searching out the tender leaves. Plucking, drying, roasting, packing.

To be brought back to life with freshly boiled Devon water.

Crystallised violets

Crystallised violets

Background:

This is the first yarn I spun from my own rolags.

Story:

There’s no scent on earth like the sweet smell of violets. They seem to remain from a bygone era:

The aroma of the fifties, or of your grandmother’s home.

Petals preserved in their unfurled lilac tones. Sugar crystals glinting like magic dust, sprinkled on to cast a spell; preserving a moment in time like a sweet snapshot.

Oh! The Places You’ll Go.

Background:

A friend of mine won a set of rolags from Defarge Yarns, which I offered to spin. There were all manner of colours and, especially, textures in the fibre. It was quite an adventure!

Story:

A journey like none you’ve been on before.

Verdant shrubs, wiry thicket, soft seagrass, beach and blossom.

Stroll the smooth dunes

Hop over the hillocks

Hide behind the boulders

Take time to look, and to see.

Appreciate the landscape, for it is unique.

It will take you places you’ve never been before.

The adventure is in the journey.

Buttons Be Good!

Buttons Be Good!

Background:

Spun for a friend, Kirsty of Buttons Be Good, this was another experimental art yarn. I had thought for a while that tiny, colourful buttons scattered through a yarn would be fun. I wanted to make the base a slightly thick’n’thin singles yarn and I had some beautiful falkland fibre to work with. This yarn became an experiment in how little I could do to the fibre in the creation of the finished yarn. It is very lightly spun in order to retain its softness, and lightly wrapped in a highlight thread which carries the buttons.

Story:

2015-08-08 08.26.36

When I was little, my granny’s button box was a treasure trove of adventure. I could dive my hand right into the well of shiny trinkets and feel the smoothness of them slipping past my fingers, making space for me. I could count them, sort them, arrange them according to colours and textures and sizes. I could build landscapes of imagination, and lose all time, lost in play.

I grew older. I bought my own button box! Excavated from a jumble sale, filled with another family’s memories.

Now it helps to create new stories, so maybe one day someone will look back and remember my button box, and all the places that it took them to.
