Magma

Standard
Magma

Background:

I love spinning batts as singles yarn. This beautiful batt from Habetrot fibres was called “Darkness” and inspired this Magma yarn, which in turn inspired its owner to design and make this “Queen of Hearts” ponchette. You can see the gradient yarn worked up into the pattern on the ravelry link.

Story:

You think the earth is dark and cold under your feet? Not a bit of it.

We are clinging to the skin of a boiling sphere of rock.

Heavy elements swirl below, occasionally breaking the surface to remind us of their presence, and power.

Land, that we like to think of as so permanent. That we like to possess, that through history we have fought over again and again, is destroyed and created constantly.

We seek permanence. Yet the stuff of life is change.

Disco Lights

Disco Lights

Background:

This was one half of a skill swap. In return for hooking up a crochet pattern for me, I received two beautiful rolag sets to spin into yarn. This is one of those rolag sets.

Story:

Disco lights.

Disco darkness.

Do you hear the music better when there’s less to see?

Maybe not less. But other.

There’s the light show. Primaries and secondaries. No subtleties. Pulsing, dancing, rolling, chasing over walls and ceiling and people.

People on the dark dance floor. Why do they come here? To forget? To live? To be in their own skin? To care? To not care?

This temple of dark and music, of noise and lights, of abstraction and connection. Disco lights: witness to it all.

Supernumeraries

Supernumeraries

Background:

I’m a big fan of skill swapping. For me it’s a win-win. For this swap I received the yarn I needed for a project and in return I got to spin this wonderful fibre! The rainbow rolags were from Blue Barn Fiber, a new maker for me. I decided to spin them one after another to create a repeating rainbow pattern, which inspired the name ‘supernumeraries’. To bring out the rainbow colours I plied it with fine, soft, white Falkland wool.

Story:

Sometimes seven stripes just isn’t enough.

Nature goes abundant – it gives us extra:

Supernumeraries – when the rainbow just doesn’t want to end.

It’s one of many sky stories. Like auras, sun dogs, halos and the northern lights.

Light dances with water

with ice

with dust.

Fields waltz together – electricity playing with magnetism to light the sky.

Nature is many things. But how often do we think of it as playful?

Maybe there’s a lesson to be learnt in that idea.

Cherished

Cherished

Background:

Yesterday was the funeral of little Kycie, who I wrote about here. She, and all children dealing with type 1 diabetes, have been on my mind a lot this week. It is a much misunderstood condition. I had no idea of the impact it has on every aspect of life, before it became our life. I had no idea of the grinding relentlessness of the condition.

Every time I saw an update from Kycie’s page I was glad to see the messages getting out into the wider world. But much more than that, the message that came through loud and clear was just what a very cherished child Kycie was. This image was so strong, that this skein simply designed itself and demanded to be made real.

So here is “Cherished”. All proceeds from its sale will be donated to JDRF, the Type 1 Diabetes charity.

Story:

Cherished Child

Held in the hearts of a worldwide family.

Through your strength we learn humility.

Through your life we learn gratitude.

You teach us every day.

We walk together.

We hold you – without realising that you hold us too.

You live your story with grace,

So we thank you for sharing out lives

And renewing the flow of abundant love.

Dedicated to all children who live with, or have died from, Type 1 Diabetes.
